What is a bill of material (BOM)?
A bill of materials is a comprehensive list of all the raw materials, component parts, sub-assemblies and assemblies that are required to manufacture a product. If you were making a cake, it would be called the list of ingredients.
What is bill of materials software?
Bill of materials software, sometimes referred to as BOM management software or MRP software, is used to control both materials and resources (labour and machinery) in a manufacturing business, with the aim of optimising stock levels, whilst minimising the cost and time taken to produce manufactured parts or assemblies.
How are bills of materials created?
A user can create a bill of materials in many different ways, however the three most common are from a CAD drawing, from a spreadsheet list or directly into a bill of materials software system. Some bill of materials software will allow the importing of bill of materials from either a CAD software package or from a spreadsheet. If a bill of materials is created in a spreadsheet, it is prone to manual errors and can therefore not always be accurate. If the bill of materials is created in a CAD software package, although it should be accurate, it may be necessary to add additional consumable parts to complete the exercise.
How can QuickWorks help improve my manufacturing process?
QuickWorks will help you to reduce your lead-times and improve your delivery performance. Creating a bill of materials could not be easier. Furthermore, you can import a bill of materials from a CAD software package or a spreadsheet or by copying another bill of materials already in QuickWorks, which can then be amended if required. Whether it's a simple one level or multi level bill of materials with sub-assemblies, QuickWorks can help you manage all the materials required to manufacture the products you make, from identifying what you need to order through to knowing when you can start a job.
QuickWorks will ensure that all the parts on your bill of materials have full traceability, so that you can meet the requirements of your quality management system and external approvals.
By comparing your planned bill of material costs against your actual bill of material costs, QuickWorks allows you to understand and improve your costings in the future.

What people say about QuickWorks
"In 6 years, H2M has grown from 12 to 35 staff and now operate across two sites, manufacturing hard to make components. QuickWorks has helped us reduce errors, improve delivery performance and made it easy to communicate changes"

Why has QuickWorks been developed?
QuickWorks has been developed by individuals who have over 30 years of experience working with small manufacturing businesses
"Without an effective manufacturing system many small businesses struggle to grow, as they find it impossible to migrate away from micro-management. Therefore, it is essential the system is not only easy to adopt, it must enable them to transfer task ownership and decision making."
